It is important to keep valuable possessions safe. Most of us like to keep our valuables safe and intact and have thought about getting or renting a safe deposit box. Although there are many items worth storing in a safe deposit box, there are some that are not.

Safe deposit boxes are suitable for the following items:

  1. Copies of your insurance policies and wills. It is suggested to photocopy your insurance policies and wills and store them in safe deposit boxes. The originals should be kept elsewhere or handled by your lawyer. Unless otherwise instructed, only your lawyer can open your safe deposit box when you die. The original copies will then be needed for processing. It is for your own protection to have copies of the policies and wills in case you need to present proofs in some situations, and the original ones are not with you.
  2. Details of your bank accounts, investments, and credit cards. A good investor or a responsible home owner would keep track of important information such as bank accounts, investments, and credit cards. You may want to keep this information in a safe to ensure that there will be no access to your money. It can be mentioned in your last will about these details, so that your loved ones may be able to access your funds when you die.
  3. Divorce decree and marriage license. Marital status is important. There are some benefits that are only given to married couples, such as your right to your spouse’s estate. Should you go through a divorce proceeding, you also need to present a marriage license. Though these documents will be the last things burglars will look for, you may still want to place them in safe deposit boxes. It will ensure that nobody will make a claim using your papers or to avoid misplacement of them. The same goes with birth certificates.
  4. Heirlooms and savings. Heirlooms and savings are personal assets. The former are not only the most treasured pieces of the family, but they can be of high value when the right time comes. Your savings, meanwhile, can be utilized when you don’t have enough cash on hand.
